Getting Started with Tabit POS: Explore the Basics and Continue to Lessons

Overview

Tabit POS is a mobile-first POS system that is particularly popular in the hospitality industry. It emphasizes operational efficiency, flexibility, and seamless customer experiences.

Let’s relate Modifiers, Decisions, Items, Menus, and Catalogs to how they function within Tabit POS:

Items and Menus in Tabit POS

Items:

  • In Tabit, individual menu items (e.g., "Burger," "Pasta") are set up in the backend with specific properties like price, description, and applicable modifiers/decisions.

  • Items may have dynamic pricing for happy hours or events.

Menus:

  • Menus in Tabit act as categorized groups of items for quick access by servers.

  • The system supports multiple menus based on times of the day (e.g., Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) or specific locations. Menus are different than Day Parts for reporting. If you’d like to modify Day Parts on reports, please contact Flyght Support.

  • Example Interaction:

    • Menu: "Dinner" or “Happy Hour” or “Brunch”.

    • Items: "Steak," "Grilled Salmon," "Veggie Pasta".

    • The server selects "Dinner" and navigates to the desired item.

Modifiers in Tabit POS

 How It Works:

  • Tabit allows you to create item modifiers to customize orders based on customer preferences.

  • When an item is selected on the Tabit POS tablet, a list of modifiers may appear for the server to add optional or upsell options.

  • Modifiers can have a price attached (e.g., "Extra Cheese" adds $1.50).

  • Example:

    • Item: "Pasta"

    • Modifiers: "Add Parmesan," "Gluten-Free," "Extra Sauce"

    • Server uses the modifier options to tailor the item during order entry.

  • As of 3/1/2025, you may include nested modifiers as well so that one modifier can modify another modifier.

  • Example

    • Item: “Steak”

    • Modifier: “Side Choice“

    • Nested Modifier: When “Side Salad” is selected, then including “Dressing“ and “Salad Add Protein”.

 Decisions in Tabit POS

What is a Decision?

  • A list of item(s) or free text that needs to be selected before ordering an item

  • A list of item(s) or free text that is already selected but can be overridden before ordering an item

  • Cannot have price associated to it

  • Only one value can be selected/applied, and one value must always be select

Catalog in Tabit POS

How It Works:

  • Tabit uses a central catalog that integrates items, menus, pricing rules, and modifiers across all devices in the system. This catalog is fixed, meaning the hierarchy and bucket names are not modifiable. This is to ensure continuity across the entire platform. Individual Menus can be used to subjectively organize menu items to your liking, and reports are available to view item sales inside the menu or catalog views.

  • Updates to the catalog (e.g., new seasonal dishes or changes in prices) are synced in real time to ensure consistency across all terminals.

  • Supports special rules like discounts, promotions, or item availability based on location or time.

Why It’s Used in Tabit:

  • To manage items, modifiers, and menus across multiple restaurants or branches.

  • To ensure uniform experiences (Kiosk, Online, In-Store, 3rd Party) by syncing updates instantly.

  • To analyze data within reporting, such as which items or modifiers are most popular.

Example Workflow in Tabit POS

  1. Catalog Setup:

    • Backend: Add items to an LTO catalog bucket with items like "Mango Smoothie," each with its modifiers (e.g., "Add Protein Powder").

  2. Menu Setup:

    • Menu: Add items to a new menu called “Summer Specials Menu”.

  3. Server Interaction:

    • At the table: Server selects "Summer Specials Menu," then "Mango Smoothie."

    • Modifier options appear: "Add Protein Powder" or "Extra Mango."

  4. Decisions:

    • Tabit prompts the server to ask: "Would you like this blended or on ice?"

  5. Menu Presentation:

    • The item appears with the selected modifiers and decisions added to the order, ensuring accuracy for the kitchen/prep station.
